This Hoodie

In 1919, the Knickerbocker Knitting Company made the first hooded sweatshirt. Later known as "Champion," the sweatshirt manufacturer intended it as a thicker underwear material. Thank god then company president and ball-sweat-antagonist, Harold Lipson, used the fabrics instead to protect athletes, cold-storage laborers, and tree surgeons from the elements. Decades later, football and track athletes wore them on the sidelines in lousy weather until their girlfriends began to wear them to school as a fashion statement. Fast forward to the mid-Seventies, hip-hop culture, and graffiti writers used hoodies to keep a low profile and store their cans, while break-dancers wore them “to keep their bodies warm before they hit the floor.” Despite its rich history, we now wear our This Hoodie because we forgot how to dress ourselves during the pandemic.
